Teal, Leighton Moss
The Teal is the smallest resident European duck, but it has superb colouring and vermiculated feathers, and it is a delight to see at close quarters, as here at Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve in February. I watched numbers of drakes displaying to a single female, bobbing their heads up and down and then almost standing up in the water, before swimming round a female. I observed this pattern of behaviour repeated in several different groups of Teal at Leighton Moss.
