Great Pied Hoverfly - Volucella pellucens
Volucella are amongst the largest British hoverflies and are instantly recognisable. Volucella pellucens has distinctive white markings on the abdomen contrasting with an otherwise black thorax and abdomen. It is commonly known as the Great Pied Hoverfly. Location: on a red poppy amongst wildflowers in my garden in Little Rissington, Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, in July.
